Breastshields for large & small nipples - because one size does not fit all!
If you are using a breast pump, it is very important that you have a correctly fitted breastshield (the breastshield, also called the flange, is the part of the pump that fits over your nipple and breast). This will help make your pumping comfortable, and allow the pump to remove as much of your milk as possible.
Medela Personal Fit Breastshields allow you to choose the breastshield that is the right size, to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency while pumping. A correctly fitted breastshield avoids compression of any milk ducts during pumping to ensure optimal breast emptying and maximum milk output. This will help maintain milk production and support lactation.
The Personal Fit Breastshield with Connector can be used with the Medela Harmony Manual, Mini-Electric, Mini-Electric PLUS, Swing and Pump In Style Advanced breast pumps. Kit comes with one breastshield and connector.
Is my Breastshield the Right Size?
All Medela pumps are sold with a standard medium-sized 24mm breastshield. You can easily check if this is the right size for you by looking at your nipple as it is drawn into the tunnel of the shield during pumping. It should move freely and easily, and should not rub against the sides of the tunnel.
If the breastshield is too small, your nipple will rub against the sides with each vacuum movement of the pump. You may find pumping is uncomfortable and causes nipple soreness. You may also see a little ring of skin flecks in the tunnel of the breastshield after you pump. While a little circle of milk in the tunnel is normal, a ring of skin flecks probably indicates that the tunnel is too small, and that you would be more comfortable with a larger breastshield. When your nipple moves freely in the tunnel of the breastshield, you will also see a gentle pulling movement in the areola each time the pump cycles. If you do not see any movement in the areola with the pump vacuum, the breastshield is probably too small.
Using a too small (or too large) breastshield may lead to impaired milk removal because milk ducts could get blocked or milk ejection inhibited. Over time, this can result in reduced milk output. Friction around the nipple and/or areola can cause discomfort and trauma which may cause a mother to only pump infrequently. Again, milk production is jeopardised. Tissue breakdown due to nipple trauma carries the risk of infection and mastitis.
